ABC has unveiled its summer unscripted schedule and it looks like things are back to normal after last year’s Covid interruption.
The Disney-owned network has renewed its slate of classic game shows including The Chase, Press Your Luck, and The $100,000 Pyramid among others.
Rob Mills, EVP, Unscripted and Alternative Entertainment, Walt Disney Television, told Deadline that he was thrilled to be able to get so many shows on this summer. “The year before the pandemic, we had made a play to really program summer like we programmed the rest of the year and have original programming on almost every night. Now (after the pandemic) the fact that we can produce all these shows and we’re going to have new original programming on almost the entire summer, it feels great.”
The Chase
The Chase is back with a second season. The show launched in January with nine episodes and the second season has received a supersized order. “The Chase is one of those ones we wanted to get back on as soon as possible because we really want the momentum of that format to keep going,” said Mills. “Hopefully you’ll see million dollar final chases in this second cycle. But we really are high on that format. We’re excited with how it did this winter and we’re glad we can bring it back so quickly.”
"The Chase" is produced by ITV America's ITV Entertainment and based on the hit British format, devised by Potato, part of ITV Studios. Adam Sher, David Eilenberg, Bernie Schaeffer and Vin Rubino are the executive producers, and Rich DiPirro directs.
The $100,000 Pyramid
Michael Strahan is back as host of "The $100,000 Pyramid," the timeless word-association game in which two celebrities and their partners face off in a race against the clock to make it to the winner's circle and take home $100,000.
"The $100,000 Pyramid" is produced by SMAC Entertainment in association with Sony Pictures Television. "The $100,000 Pyramid" is executive produced by Michael Strahan, Constance Schwartz and Vin Rubino. Rich DiPirro has directed all five seasons of the series on ABC.
Press Your Luck
Hosted by Elizabeth Banks, "Press Your Luck," is a game of wits, strategy and even higher stakes as contestants try to avoid the iconic and devilish WHAMMY for a chance at life-changing cash and prizes. During each game of "Press Your Luck," three contestants compete against each other answering questions to earn spins on the Big Board. Contestants then use their spins to win cash and prizes while trying to avoid the WHAMMY, who could take all of their winnings and leave them with nothing. The winning contestant moves on to the bonus round to face the WHAMMY in a final battle for the chance to win a million dollars.
"Press Your Luck" is produced by Fremantle. The show is executive produced by Jennifer Mullin, Elizabeth Banks, Max Handelman and John Quinn, who also serves as showrunner. This is the third incarnation of the popular game show featuring the incorrigible Whammy, the most recent two directed by Rich DiPirro.
